History[]

Anisage is an undead being born from a necromantic experiment carried out by her "father", who wanted to revive his daughter who had died from an illness. His attempts at necromancy were forbidden, so he was exiled from his country. However, the end result of his efforts didn't bring back his daughter from the dead, but instead created Anisage, an astral spirit contained in his daughther reanimated corpse. Despite the failure of his efforts, he eventually decide to raise Anisage as his second daughter.

Anisage and her father lived a happy and paceful life until one night, soldiers broke into her home and accused her father of being a necromancer. Anisage hid in the cellar but heard her father scream in pain and ran back upstairs. She chased away the soldiers, but her home was destroyed, and her father was mortally wounded. On his deathbed, Anisage's father revealed to Anisage that he is not her daughter.

As the soldiers who previously attacked return, Ansiage's father apologizes for letting himself get hurt and tells Anisage that she has powers that prevent anything from holding her back. Anisage's father says his goodbyes to Anisage, telling her he loves her and asks her to live a happy life before dying. The soldiers try to capture Anisage, but Anisage unleashes her powers in a grief fueled rage an escaped. Anisage discovered that her powers allowed her to go anywhere, and she could live forever as long as her body remained intact, but she was lost without her father. One day, she laid down to rest and awoke in Ametsuchi.

The Empyrean Inn[]

While searching for a way to return home, Anisage cloaking abilities that allow her to travel undetected start rumors of a ghost in the inn. Suddenly, she senses her father and travels into a hall filled with webs. She is found by Saito, one of the inn's concierge, despite her cloaking, who begins questioning her. Anisage explains she doesn't want to cause trouble and only wants to return to her father, but the conversation is interrupted by a Sootspawn monster. Saito destroys the Sootspawn and claims the memory shard before attacking Anisage, seeing her as a threat to Ametuschi. He attacks Anisage, declaring there is no way for her to ever return home.

After a dream where she spends time with her father, Anisage awakens and discovers a female guest taking care of her along with two others. The woman explains she found Anisage badly injured and took care of her. The woman also explains people like them who want their memories back and to return home are called Forsaken. Anisage realizes she can't return home on her own and decides to take the help of the other Forsaken. The Forsaken woman agrees to tell her all she knows of Ametuschi and how to escape it.

Saito admits he is surprised Anisage survived their previous encounter and attacks, but the Forsaken woman stalls him and orders Anisage to flee. Anisage flees using her cloaking, but Saito pursues her and she crashes into a werewolf named Itsurugi. Anisage tries to flee to avoid dragging Itsurugi into her mess, but Itsurugi offers to have Taketsumi help with whatever her problem is. Anisage denies Itsurugi's offer when she remembers Taketsumi destroyed a memory shard, but Itsurugi insists on helping and shows Anisage an alley to escape through and misdirects Saito away from her.

The other Forsaken reveal their plan: they will cause a ruckus to distract the concierge while Anisage sneaks into Weaver's Hall and finds her memories. Anisage is reluctant to go through with the plan but agrees when the other Forsaken reveal they have dreams and loved ones back in their worlds. Anisage infiltrates Weaver's Hall but is found by a member of the concierge named Mizuchi while searching for her memories. Mizuchi is able to detect Anisage through her cloaking and prepares to attack her. Anisage declares the Forsaken aren't criminals, they are people who wish to return home, and vows to do so before escaping Mizuchi. Mizuchi reluctantly gives up her hunt and leaves to report to Saito.

Anisage finds a Sootspawn with her memory shard and defeats it with the help of Itsurugi. Upon recovering heris past, Anisage confronts Saito again. He then reveals that he still has the first memory shard belonging to Anisage he took when she first arrived in Ametsuchi, unable to destroy it. Anisage fights to reclaim the memory shard. Despite her new strength, Anisage is unable to defeat Saito, but continues resisting him and manages to steal back her memory shard and escape. Anisage retreats to the Forsaken's secret room and witnesses her memories from the shard she stole from Saito.

The Forsaken Woman, who escaped from Saito, reaches the Forsaken's room and finds Anisage after she recovers all her memories. Despite the sadness of her memories, Anisage still wishes to return home and build her father a grave. The Forsaken Woman reveals a monster is rampaging in the inn, and it is the Great Spider. Anisage decides to destroy the Great Spider in order to protect the precious memories stolen by it. She tracks the Great Spider to Weaver's Hall where Mizuchi approaches her. Mizuchi explains that she did not come to hurt Anisage and apologizes for her previous actions towards her. She reveals that she has always followed the rules, but she has seen where that path will lead her and wishes to change it. She also reveals that a Dragonling names Si Long is planning to destroy everyone's memories and has to be stopped. The two join forces to protect the memories.

The Empyrean Inn: Last Resort[]

After fighting the Sootspawns, the two are ambushed by Saito. Anisage tells Mizuchi to stop Si Long while she handles Saito and Mizuchi reluctantly leaves. Saito calmly reveals he was already planning on stopping Si Long, revealing he suspected that she and Mizuchi were the same person from different times. He then declares Anisage is a monster, something he has experience in killing them, but Anisage tells him he is wrong and fights him. He recalls his miserable life back in his own world and reveals he previously read Anisage's own bad memories. He offers her a chance to lose her memories and return to a peaceful life at the inn, but Anisage defies him, telling him he has forgotten his heart and unleashes a massive boost in mana to fight back, declaring her heart's power is the reason Saito cannot defeat her.

Despite her increase in power, Saito takes control of the magic wards in Weaver's Hall to protect him and uses his experience fighting monsters to gain the upper hand. He then summons a Sootspawn and uses it at a shield, knowing Anisage won't risk destroying the memory shard inside. Despite the disadvantage, Anisage refuses to give up and realizes Saito's weakness.

Anisage manages to whittle down Saito's wards, but he grows angry at her continued defiance and begins beating her while condemning her a selfish child. Anisage fend him off, calling him a hypocrite for throwing a tantrum when he doesn't get his way and declares him a coward, pushing off all his accountability for his actions on his job because he is afraid of his past. She declares she knows how to live her own life, unlike Saito, and unleashes her full might. In the aftermath of the attack, Saito discovers that the attack wasn't meant for him, it was meant to distract him while Anisage took the memory shard from the Sootspawn, a shard that belongs to Saito. Anisage then uses the crystal to make Saito face his weakness: his own memories. The trauma from Saito's past cripples his and Anisage leaves him to face his memories as punishment for depriving others of theirs.

After winning their respective battles, Mizuchi and Anisage regroup and learn of Taketsumi's victory over the Great Spider and Mizuchi wonders where the shards the Great Spider had inside its body went. An earthquake rocks the inn and the two follow a light to Weaver's Hall. There, they discover that dozens of people are remembering their bad memories from the previous flash. Suddenly, Maisha appears and attacks the two in order to please Nerva, whom she senses is close. She reveals that Nerva will soon destroy the world and is eager to aid her goal of destruction. Maisha proves to powerful for Anisage and Mizuchi to handle, but Si Long arrives to aid them. When even Si Long's power isn't enough, the three team up to take on Maisha.

The three overwhelm Maisha and defeat her with a combined attack. They question Maisha on who she is and why she attacked them, but she only answers that she serves Nerva at any cost. Before leaving with the others, Anisage tells Maisha she wishes she could be back with her loved ones in her own world. Maisha ponders Anisage's words before collapsing.

The group finds Saito, still reeling from getting his memories back, who reveals Taketsumi has become the new Great Spider. A transformed Taketsumi arrives and reveals his plan to erase all painful memories in Ametsuchi as well as admitting he returned all memories to buy time for his transformation. He explains that he disliked that Ametsuchi's previous management under Kunitsu, which allowed some memories to escape, so he usurped him and became the new deity to remove all bad memories and replace them with happy ones from the inn. He strips the three of their memories, leaving them to believe they are back to being guests at the inn. He does the same for the entire inn and everyone returns to living in ignorance, except this time Taketsumi sacrifices people to take all their memories for power, something the guests are happy to accept.

After Itsurugi defeats Taketsumi, everyone returns to normal. Itsurugi asks the others what they plan to do and Si Long, Mizuchi, and Anisage explain they will return to their own worlds and find happiness. Kunitsu escorts them to the Cataract and Anisage leaves to make her father's grave.
