Kai Ijūin is a Runecraft leader in Shadowverse, a supporting protagonist in the 2020 Shadowverse anime, and a supporting character in Shadowverse: Champion's Battle and Shadowverse Flame.

Kai is a 1st year student of Tensei Academy like Hiro and his friends, being an outstanding student for his high grades. After hearing that Hiro defeated Luca Yonazuki, the only player Kai couldn't defeat, he decides to challenge him to battle. Despite losing, Kai develops a great admiration for Hiro and his passion to never give up.
Kai participates in the National Tournament, being eliminated in the second round by Mauro Abelard.
Kai slowly becomes part of Hiro's group of friends, despite having a strained relationship with Kazuki Shindo. This changes during the Shadow Grand Prix, where the two team up to face Zuo and Ko, and then the Shadow Knights, gaining more respect for each other.
After reaching the end of the Shadow Grand Prix, Kai along with the other protagonists become the chosen ones to save the world from the Tree of Woe. To this end, Leon sends them to the ruins of the Mythical Cards. There, Kai confronts a Shadow-possessed Vanessa Justine, managing to win by remembering Alice's words.
After fighting various Empty Shadows around the city, all seven are sucked into the Tree of Woe. Kai is sent to a dream world where he attains the fame he always dreamed of as a "genius among geniuses". However, Asagi guides him out of his dream to the world of his Mythical Card, where Isabelle's spirit saves him from the soldiers who want to burn down her lab and then takes him to her hideout. However, she forces him to become a subject of experimentation to find the forbidden magic. Kai breaks free thanks to his Chrono Witch card and faces Spirit Isabelle in a Shadowverse battle. Upon winning by attaining his will of being the best he could in all he does, Kai return to the real world along his friends.
He finally joins the others to fight the Empty Shadows and later supports Hiro in his final battle with Leon.
After the battle between Hiro and Luca in the second Nationals, Kazuki and Kai decides to take their time preparing for the high-school exams. Three years later, during Shadowverse Flame, the two started to run Kazuki's family restaurant together. They meet Itsuki Mitsutagawa in Nekome and tells him about their familiarity with some of the Seven Shadows.
Later, while closing up the restaurant, Kai and Kazuki encounter the Shade monsters invading Nekome. Although Kai questions the origin of the crisis and its relation to what happened with Leon and the Tree of Woe, Kazuki urges him to go to Hiro's message to reclaim the Mithycal Cards sealed at Shadowverse College.
Personality (Anime)[]
Kai is a serious and focused young man. He prides himself on his intelligence and being a "genius among geniuses", always facing any situation with logic and calculation. However, after his battle with Hiro and bonding his other comrades, he began to see the importance of feelings and passion.
Deck (Anime)[]
Kai uses a Runecraft deck. His main resource is to Spellboost his cards to strengthen their effects or reduce their costs, for which he uses a large number of spells during his battles, mainly to damage enemies, increase his hand or summon token followers. His winning move is to revive his destroyed followers with Chrono Witch after Spellboosting it enough times.

Etymology[]
- Kai's surname "Ijūin" means "that one" (伊 i), "collection, gather, meet, congregate, swarm, flock" (集 shū, jū) and "hospital" (院 in).
