Leon Aurenche is a Portalcraft leader in Shadowverse, a supporting character in Shadowverse: Champion's Battle and the main antagonist of the 2020 Shadowverse anime. He is the CEO of the Genesis Corporation, which created the Shadowverse digital card game, and a Grandmaster ranked player.
Biography (Champion's Battle)[]
Leon is the CEO of the Genesis Corporation and the creator of the Shadowverse digital card game, which his company produces. He is a Grandmaster ranked player, of which there are only a handful of in the world. One of his employees states that he created Shadowverse "practically all by himself." Throughout the game, he and his assistant Marguerite Valois keep a close watch on the protagonist as well as their classmate Rei Saotome, noticing and intrigued by their skills in Shadowverse. During chapter 5, he sends the Joubert sisters, Vanessa and Vivian, to test them by battling them in the Silver Cup.
During chapter 7, while searching for Rei's whereabouts in the Underverse Arena, the Joubert sisters say they'll give the protagonist information in exchange for the extremely rare Shadow Bahamut card. When the Tensei Academy Shadowverse Club is discussing how to obtain it, Leon suddenly appears in their clubroom and issues them a challenge, since he is one of the very few owners of the card. If each of the club members can defeat him in Shadowverse, he'll give Shadow Bahamut to the protagonist. If any of them lose, however, he will reset each of their ranks.
While battling with Hiro, Leon says "You remind me of someone," suggesting he possibly has a connection to Eiji Ryƫgasaki as he does in the anime.
After he is defeated by each member of the club, Leon lives up to his end of the bargain and rewards the protagonist with Shadow Bahamut.
Later, in chapter 10, Leon issues yet another challenge to the protagonist, where if they complete it, they will be also be rewarded with the rank of Grandmaster. This challenge involves them needing to defeat the Shadow Knights, two players that Leon has personally, specially trained to be the very best of the best, as well as Marguerite. Finally, they must defeat Leon himself yet again, this time in two phase battle where he summons The Almighty One at the start of the second phase. Once the protagonist is successful, he awards them the Grandmaster rank.
Personality (Champion's Battle)[]
Unlike his anime counterpart, Leon in Champion's Battle is not evil, nor is there any malicious intent behind his actions. Instead, he's merely an odd, rather immature man who enjoys high stakes games and is highly fixated on seeking out especially skilled opponents in Shadowverse, ones who are capable of presenting an actual challenge for him.
Leon maintains a positive, relaxed, and casual demeanor in nearly all situations, even ones where he probably shouldn't. When the members of the Tensei Academy Shadowverse Club arrive at the Genesis Corporation building to battle him for Shadow Bahamut, he complains that "She never lets me have any fun."
Despite being the wealthy CEO of a large and hugely successful tech company, he takes time out to observe the local children who play Shadowverse, in order to see if any display particularly exceptional talent at the game. He arrives at Tensei Academy completely unannounced and out of nowhere, just to show up at the Shadowverse Club and issue a challenge to its members. When the club members huddle together to discuss his sudden arrival, he takes it upon himself to nonchalantly join them in the huddle and conversation, further demonstrating his childish and carefree attitude.
However, regardless of his quirky and erratic behavior, Leon is shown to be honest and trustworthy. He awards Shadow Bahamut and the rank of Grandmaster to the protagonist after they complete both respective challenges, exactly as he said he would. After giving Shadow Bahamut to the protagonist, he tells them "Don't go losing it in a crazy bet or anything," showing some self-depreciation and self-awareness of his actions.
Biography (Anime)[]
Leon was colleagues with Hiro's parents, Eiji and Asagi, who together investigated the secrets of the Tree of Woe and created the Shadowverse game using its power. However, its power turned out to be too great resulting in the disappearance of Eiji and Asagi to another world. This was actually orchestrated by Leon himself who was looking to get them both out of the way to use the power of the Tree of Woe for himself.
In order to fulfill his Project Nexus, Leon created the eight Mythical Cards to combat Nexus and the Empty Shadows. However, these could only be used by those whom the cards chose. Leon attempted to wield the Portalcraft card, but when it did not choose him, Leon decided to recreate it with part of its essence put into the Genesis Artifact card and the rest into the "Arc Autonomous Defense System".
At some point, he rescued a young Mauro Abelard from starving in the streets, before adopting him and raising him to become one of the seven saviours he was destined to be. He also tricks Mauro by telling him that in order to save the world he would have to sacrifice his life, leading Mauro to harbor a great anguish.
Leon then orchestrated the Shadowverse tournaments for the purpose of seeking strong players, who would one day save the world from the Tree of Woe. This however is revealed to be a scheme for his true goal of obtaining the power of Nexus to remake the world.
He paid special attention to Hiro Ryƫgasaki, knowing that he is Eiji's son. In their first meeting at the Shadowverse Stadium, the two battled to decide whether Hiro would ascend to Master Rank to participate in the National Tournament or get his rank reseted.
Leon organizes the Shadow Grand Prix to finally choose the seven who would save the world, promising to hand over Genesis Corporation to the winner of the tournament. To reduce the number of candidates, he sends his Shadow Knights to eliminate as many players as they can. When only Hiro, Luca, Mimori, Kazuki, Kai, Alice and Mauro are left, Leon reunites them revealing that the Tree of Woe invaded the world to destroy it and that they must stop it. Before, he makes them face the Shadow Knights to decide if they are worthy, with Leon personally confronting Hiro, further revealing part of his past with Eiji and Asagi.
Leon supervises from a distance how the seven obtain the Mythical Cards, especially how Mauro merge with the Empty Shadows and how Eiji appears as leader of the Shadows.
When the Tree of Woe plunges the world into a dream, Leon is the only one who avoids falling into it as he had planned. He also put the seven chosen's smartphones out of line to prevent them from stopping the Tree of Woe with the Mythical Cards. Following his true plans, he absorbs Nexus, who was inside Asagi's body, into himself. However, Hiro manages to defeat him in one last battle with the help of his friends.
When the Tree of Woe tower disappears, Leon falls into the void and awakens to be greeted by Eiji and Asagi. The three then set off for an unknown destination.
Three years later, during Shadowverse Flame, Leon reappears in middle of the Arc Ruler's invasion of Nekome City to save Mauro from the Shades. Leon apologizes to Mauro for manipulating his feelings and takes responsibility for creating the Arc Ruler. He also warns that there is another enemy, Nexus, who must remain alive since the world behind the Tree of Woe still exists.
Following the defeat of Wolfram Zerga and the disappearance of the Tree of Woe, Eiji and Asagi leave for America with Leon to continue their research to change the world. Leon also sends Mauro to offer Marguerite a break from her CEO position, but she decides to continue with her work.
Personality (Anime)[]
Leon is shown as a charismatic man who always maintains a calm and positive attitude in every situation. He is later revealed as a calculating and manipulative man, displaying a great megalomania and god complex. The cruelest side of him is shown by disposing of Mauro as a simple object, all of which he hides under a façade of kindness.
Deck (Anime)[]
Leon uses a Havencraft and later a Portalcraft Deck.
His Havencraft deck is centered in a combination of Sacred Lion with Holy Lion Sanctrum to protect it, while also destroying enemy followers and lowering the enemy leader's defense at the same time. Upon absorbing Nexus, Leon acquires cards like Shadow Mode, which gives him access to Artifact and Shadow cards, and Calamity's Genesis, which creates the overwhelming Calamity Cards that pretty much guarantees his victory.
