Mauro Abelard, known as Maura Aberald in Japan, is a Havencraft leader in Shadowverse, a supporting protagonist in the 2020 Shadowverse anime, and a supporting character in Shadowverse: Champion's Battle and Shadowverse Flame.
Biography[]
Mauro was alone and homeless as a child, so Leon Aurenche adopted him, with the sole purpose of developing Mauro's Shadowverse skills so he can eventually sacrifice his life to save the world from the Tree of Woe.
Mauro is the opponent whom Hiro first met at the semi-finals of the National Shadowverse Tournament, and later have another match in the Shadow Grand Prix where appeared to mysteriously already know Hiro and his father. He is revealed to be aware of the Tree of Woe's danger since before Leon revealed it to the other six chosen ones, having been groomed to become one of the chosen just like the Shadow Knights.
As the seven chosen ones are sent to the ruins of the Mythical Cards, Mauro obtains his without problems, but this one has been blocked due to his doubts about his role as a sacrifice. Looking for an answer, Mauro faces Luca in a battle, being able to awaken the Mythical Card after confessing that he wants to live more than anything. The battle is canceled when the Empty Shadows possess Mauro, forcing Luca and Hiro to battle him and finally save him. Mauro then entrusts Hiro with the Prominence Fusion card, which he had been unable to use in the battle.
When the Tree of Woe opens and everyone is sent to a dream world, Mauro finds himself in a world where he happily lives as Leon's protégé. However, he quickly understands that happiness cannot be real and guided by Asagi, he confronts the spirit of Eris in the world of the Mythical Card to return to reality, accepting that he must find a reason to live for himself.
He finally joins the others to fight the Empty Shadows and later supports Hiro in his final battle with Leon.
After the battle between Hiro and Luca in the second Nationals, Mauro decides to embark on a journey to understand the world better. During the following three years until Shadowverse Flame, Mauro maintains occasional contact with Marguarite Valios, being aware of the Arc's situation.
During a visit to Nekome City to see his friends, Mauro has a meeting with Marguerite and Ein, who reveal that they have been watching him during his stay, since the trust between them is somewhat ambiguous.
Later, while visiting Leon's grave, Mauro is contacted by his companions and Marguerite to help in the Arc Ruler's invasion by reclaiming the Mythical Cards sealed at Shadowverse College. On the way, Mauro is ambushed by a horde of empowered Shades and ends up in a bad position. However, Leon suddenly appears and saves him with his Genesis Artifact. Leon apologizes to Mauro for manipulating his feelings and takes responsibility for creating the Arc Ruler and although Mauro still shows resentment for his actions, he ends up accepting his apologies. Leon also warns that there is another enemy, Nexus, who must remain alive since the world behind the Tree of Woe still exists.
After the loss of the Mythical Cards and the Tree of Woe revived by Wolfram Zerga, Mauro reunite with his old friends and put their faith in Light Tenryu.
Following the defeat of Wolfram Zerga and the disappearance of the Tree of Woe, Mauro return to his travels but before that he visits Marguerite to give her a message from Leon to take a break from her position as CEO, but she decides to continue with her job.
Mauro is a mysterious Shadowverse player unfamiliar with Nekome City, having traveled there not only to participate in the Shadowverse National Championships, but also seek out a "Book of Forgotten Folktales" based on local legends. He was instructed to find this book by an unknown man, who he claims his "entire life has been dedicated to serving [this] certain individual, [...] Him, and him alone. But I've long dreamed of freedom. To be unshackled from these chains."
While the identity of Mauro's master is never revealed, he is apparently quite cruel, having sent Mauro on his quest to find the book in order to demoralize him and make him believe that he will never be free.
He battles the Protagonist in the Silver Cup and also appears in the last level of the Underverse Arena, being the rival that the protagonist must defeat before facing Luca Yonazuki.
Despite their connection in the anime, Mauro's master is likely not Leon Aurenche, due to Mauro not being from Nekome City, where the Genesis Corporation headquarters is located. Additionally, it is unlikely due to the inconsistency in Mauro's feelings about his "master" in the game versus Leon in the anime; in the game, Mauro despises his master and wishes to be free from serving him, while in the anime, Mauro is very fond of Leon and cares deeply for him, despite knowing that Leon plans to sacrifice Mauro's life in order to achieve his goals. Leon's characterization is also very different in the game as opposed to the anime, with him simply being strange, erratic and immature neutral party as opposed to an evil, calculating villain who hides his true nature beneath an amicable veil.
Mauro does seem to be aware of Leon in Champion's Battle, however, possibly having battled him before. During chapter 10, after Leon issues his Grandmaster challenge to the protagonist, Mauro says to them "You're going to challenge him? You must be incredibly brave... or incredibly reckless. He's a merciless opponent. Don't hold anything back against him."Personality[]
Mauro is first shown as a very friendly person but when the battle starts he is shown as a sadistic person who doesn't show mercy and even has to use the most painful hit to destroy his opponents and rejoice to see them struggle.
He suffers from a serious personality dilemma due to Leon raising him for the purpose of being sacrificed, leading him to question his own desire to live. However, after being saved from the Empty Shadows by Hiro and Luca, Mauro managed to see a new place in his life with his comrades.
Appearance[]
Mauro has green hair tied to a ponytail with some black hair on the back of his hair, he wears a necklace with four green gems and one middle red gem. His outfit consists of a yellow tunic, short pants and brown boots. He has a dark red tattoo on his cheek, his eyes are purple when he opens them.
Deck[]
Mauro uses a Havencraft deck focused on Countdown amulets. His battle style is slow at first, giving the opponent a false sense of security and then mercilessly assaulting them. His deck includes various means of accelerating Countdowns to take control of the board by summoning powerful followers, as well various defense-restoring effects to protect himself. His main strategy is using his ace card, God of Curses, to reduce the opponent's maximum defense in each turn.
When Mauro becomes possessed by Shadows, his deck changes to include the powerful three instrument cards that give the leader the ability to attack and reduce damage. It also carries many powerful cards that can wipe out the opponent's board and fill his field with powerful followers.
