Mikado Shirogane is an antagonist, later a supporting protagonist, in Shadowverse Flame. His Digital Friend is Garuel.
Biography[]
Mikado is the heir of the Shirogane family and the board chairman of Shadowverse Battle College.
Since he was a child he always had a natural talent for everything he does, including Shadowverse, already being stronger than his father by the time he taught him how to play. However, he always hid his true prowess from his father and always let his father beat him so as not to make him feel bad, until one day he accidentally beat him, which led Mikado to develop an insane taste for crushing others to the point that his father grow to be afraid of him.
His father eventually decided to make him chairman of Shadowverse College as a way for him to learn to empathize with people, which Mikado never could, seeing himself as superior to all his peers.
He observes Light Tenryu during his battle againts Haruma Hazeura, despite knowing that Light wasn't strong enough to win. He later says to Seventh Flame that in order for them to become stronger, he will organize a Shadowverse Club Tournament and that he will expel them all if they lose.
After Seventh Flame manages to win the tournament despite the unfair rules that Mikado imposes on them, he congratulates them and gives Light a data box that Wolfram Zerga entrusted to him, telling him that it was "a fragment of Light's destiny".
Mikado is challenged by Light who seeks to understand him and learn more about his relationship with Haruma's attitude. However, Mikado reveals his sadistic mentality that leads Light to suffer multiple defeats in a row.
Mikado enters the Shadowverse World Ranking with the goal of facing the Seven Shadows. However, he oversleep the first day of the competition and is unable to battle until the last moments, when he encounters Light and this one challenges him again. Even when Light is unable to beat him, Mikado gets upset as Light retains his good bearing and wishes to continue facing him. This leads Mikado to decide to finally end his hopes the next time he battles him.
Mikado kept winning and held the number 1 spot in the World Ranking throughout the whole competition. On the last day, after an unusual exchange of words with Wolfram Zerga, Mikado decides to give Light one last battle. Although Light expresses the realization that effort is more important than talent, and that it has gotten him to where he is, Mikado maintains his stance that effort is only poison for the untalented. In the end, Light achieves an unexpected victory thanks to the hidden ability of Lævateinn Dragon, Dual Form Alpha. After the battle, Mikado ends up tied for first place in the World Ranking along with Light. Despite the defeat, Mikado quickly gets over the shock and maintains his arrogant attitude.
Mikado is finally brought along with Light and the other World Ranking winners to the Shadow Area where the battle against the Seven Shadows will take place. Mikado is the first to battle, taking on Hiro Ryugasaki. Despite Hiro's attempts to make him accept his defeats and open up to others, Mikado continues to deny it, despite breaking down after losing to Hiro.
Mikado continues the path through the Shadow Area followed by Light. At one point, Mikado has an outburst assuming that Light now believes himself superior to him, but Light, Draconir, and even Garuel make him see that they are actually worried about him. Light tells him that he can overcome his defeat and that the two can become comrades, although unable to even say how to do such a thing, Mikado leaves on his own outside the designated route, although Light is glad to have reached Mikado even a little. While wandering, Mikado remembers how in the past his talent led him to hurt others without really wanting to, which left him alone and isolated from others. However, remembering Light's kind words, Mikado decides to find the answer to his predicament in Shadowverse.
Mikado ends up in the area where Itsuki was battling Luca Yonazuki, deciding to give Itsuki some support and advice, looking surprised that Itsuki refused to give up before a certain defeat. Since the number of battles was still incomplete, Luca offers one more battle, although Itsuki decides to give it to Mikado, hoping that a battle with Luca could help him with the dilemma he was facing. Although reluctant, the rest of Seventh Flame and Garuel convince Mikado to accept. During the battle, Mikado continues to show his fragile side, using defensive moves out of fear of losing, leading Luca to become disappointed in his weakness. However, Light goes to help him when he is about to give in, telling him that as his rival he knows that he can fight the best even if he loses. Mikado regains his composure upon receiving everyone's warmth and decides to continue the battle. Mikado finally wins and ties the score 4-4.
After supporting Light in the final battle against Hiro, Mikado and the rest are taken to Genesis Corporation to stop the Shade invasion led by the Arc Ruler. To do this, they are given the Nexa System and tasked with stopping the three towers created by the Arc Ruler. When Shion divides everyone into teams, Mikado offers to be in charge of going to protect Shadoba College and on the way look for Ryoga who had left on his own. Before leaving, Mikado entrust his Bahamut card to Light.
On the way, Shion contacts Mikado informing him that Ren and Tsubasa would not be able to reach the Sky Tower due to the destruction caused in their battle against Hina and Andrea, so Shion asks Mikado to go in their place alongside Ryoga. After convincing Ryoga, the two face Himmel in the Sky Tower in a 2 vs 1 battle with modified rules and with the risk of losing their lives along with the battle. Although Himmel reveals to them that they created the DigiFriends to analyze humans and determined that they are inferior, Mikado maintains his stance that they are beyond her data. Garuel then evolves into Garuel, Seraphic Shine, giving them both the victory alongside Demonium, Ultimate Devil. Saving themselves from the destruction of the Sky Tower thanks to their ace cards, Ryoga and Mikado are confronted by the empowered Shades.
When everyone gathers together after Light loses to Wolfram Zerga, and he decides to go face Wolfram once more at the risk of never coming back, Mikado cuts off transmissions from the rest of the city and assures Light that it's okay if he decides to stay and not save the world. However, Light makes the decision to go not just for the world, but for the excitement that it is the greatest battle of his life. Everyone then assures him that no matter what happens, they will be together again.
However, when Light uses Proof of Truth's effect to summon his friends' DigiFriends, this also summons his friends due to the bond each of them has with their DigiFriends. Mikado supports Light when he plays Garuel, Seraphic Shine. Winning the battle, Mikado and the rest use their ace cards to clear the way for Light and save Wolfram.
Just before the Tree of Woe disappears, Arc Ruler offers Seventh Flame to make everyone forget that they saved the world so they can go on with their normal lives. Mikado accepts, saying that he doesn't care about the respect of strangers but only of those who he respect.
Upon returning, Mikado resigns from his position as chairman to become a regular student at Shadowverse College. Light invites him to officially join Seventh Flame, but Mikado declines, saying that he doesn't want to be by Light's side, but instead stands in front of him as his rival. The two then have a World Ranking tiebreaker battle, which ends up attracting everyone's attention.
Personality[]
Mikado is normally a calm and cheerful person who always has a soft expression on his face, but he also has a somewhat frightening aura around him. Deep down, he has an unstable and somewhat psychotic side.
Being a genius with an innate talent for Shadowverse, he never saw it as something where he had to give it his all and put his heart into, seeing it solely as a tool to get rid of the world that he sees as boring. His talent leads him to develop a superiority complex and to feel pleasure by beating others and making them feel inferior to him, to the point of seeing himself as a being superior to everyone else no matter who they are. Even when he is kind to others, it is in a completely condescending way, since to him people without his talent are simply worthless.
After suffering his first losses, he immediately goes into denial trying to protect his own pride despite how fractured they actually make him feel. Ultimately, this reveals in Mikado that his despotic attitude acted as a defense mechanism against his own suffering and isolation because of his talent. However, seeing in Light the understanding and support that no one had ever given him, Mikado manages to overcome it.
Deck[]
Mikado uses a deck composed entirely of Neutral cards. His strategy consists of turning his Angel followers into Fallen versions of themselves and vice-versa, mainly through the token spell Winged Inversion, managing to switch freely between their new abilities and the buffs they gain switching back. His best card and finisher, Angel of Chaos, can become indestructible and essentially decimate the opponent's defense by itself. He also uses other overwhelming Legendary followers like Dark Gabriel and Bahamut to further control the battle.
Mikado later make use of Return to Heaven to turn his other followers into Angels, and Heavenly Temple to regain defense.
