Subaru Makabe is a Shadowcraft leader in Shadowverse and a main character in Shadowverse Flame.
In Shadowverse: Evolve, Subaru is a leader of the Abysscraft class. His leader card can be obtained in ETD02: Entry Deck Shadowverse F: Subaru Makabe and BP03: Flame of Lævateinn.
His Digital Friend is Baccherus.
Biography[]
Subaru belongs to the renowed Makabe family who always put great expectations on him that Subaru never could met. He used to look a lot after his little brother, Kaguya, but when Kaguya becomed more talented than him in everything, Subaru lose all his ambition and seriousness. Subaru ended up being rejected as heir of the family in favor of his brother, going to live on his own away from them, which also caused his relationship with Kaguya to break.
He is the first friend Light makes after transferring to Shadoba College. Subaru explains everything related to the school and suggests joining a club to integrate into Shadowverse. However, he is shocked when Light chooses to join Seventh Flame and even more so when he asks him to do the same, which he ends up doing albeit only as a non-participating member.
Subaru makes friends with Fourth Wind's president, Fuwari Hahashima, after she shows concern for him. The two have a battle when Seventh Flame go to recruit members from Fourth Wind, in which Fuwari and Light encourages him to take the battle seriously knowing his refusal to live up to the expectations of others.
After Mikado Shirogane announces to Seventh Flame that he will expel them if they lose the Shadowverse Club Tournament he is going to host, Subaru accompanies his teammates to the Shadowverse Stadium to train. However, they quickly become separated and Subaru ends up meeting Mimori Amamiya, with whom he has a battle in which Mimori encourages him that he can change and be better despite his many struggles.
Subaru is the fourth representative of Seventh Flame in the Shadowverse Club Tournament, facing Fuwari Hahajima. There he manages to finally bring out his serioussness thanks to the hopes that his clubmates put on him.
Subaru joins the Shadowverse World Ranking along his clubmates. When his brother, Kaguya, appears in the second day of the competition for an open challenge to the participants, Subaru decides to challenge him after receiving some inspiration from Light, who had battled with Mikado Shirogane. Despite refusing to run away as he had always done it, Subaru loses and his brother makes clear the difference between them.
On the final day, Subaru and Itsuki face Zuo Onizuka and Ko Hebigami. Despite facing difficulties, the two manage to draw strength from their renewed motivation to move foward, and upon winning, they position themselves in 6th and 4th place in the Ranking.
Subaru is taken along with the rest of Seventh Flame, Ryoga Jasei and Mikado Shirogane to the Shadow Area where the battle against the Seven Shadows would take place. Despite the fear of facing Kaguya again, Subaru receives encouragement from his clubmates to decide to be completely honest this time. Despite Kaguya's cruel rejection during the battle, Subaru manages to overcome the barrier that divides them by understanding that Kaguya was actually suffering from his abandonment, which allows Subaru to admit that despite his fear and constant flight, he really loves him as a brother no matter what. When Subaru wins thanks to Masquerade Ghost, Sincere, he and Kaguya finally make up and this one gives him a data box containing Draconir's memories, as well as a warning of a traitor within the Seven Shadows.
After supporting Light in the final battle against Hiro Ryugasaki, Subaru and the rest are taken to Genesis Corporation to stop the Shade invasion led by the Arc Ruler. To do this, they are given the Nexa System and tasked with stopping the three towers created by the Arc Ruler. When Shion divides everyone into teams, Subaru is assigned to the Gaia Tower along Itsuki. After overcoming the Shades they encounter with their cards and their DigiFriends, Itsuki and Subaru are received at the Gaia Tower by Erde whom they must defeat in a 2 vs 1 battle to disable the Gaia Tower.
The battle is revealed to be a duel to the death since the damage inflicted on the defense is in fact done to the life force. Erde corners them using the "Omen" of both Bloodcraft and Dragoncraft, to the point where they are able to kill both with an electric shock after leaving them out of combat. However, Baccherus and Slade intervene to shield them. This renews the strength of Itsuki and Subaru, and after reaffirming the bond with their partners, they evolve into Slade, Blossoming Storm and Baccherus, Grand Ghostie, allowing their owners to win the battle.
In disbelief of the miracle and the improbability of their defeat, Erde disappears as the Gaia Tower collapses. With their Nexa System out of power, Itsuki and Subaru are saved from the falling tower by Kaguya. The two then report to Shion what they learned during their battle and awaits medical assistance in the remains of the tower for the damage they suffered during the battle.
After watching Wolfram Zerga's broadcast announcing that he will battle Light to decide the fate of the world, Subaru and the rest of Seventh Flame run to go with him, but Light decides to go alone when he sees the fear of everyone in the city. When everyone gathers together after Light loses, and he decides to go face Wolfram once more at the risk of never coming back, Subaru apologize for not considering Light's feelings when everyone sees how scared he really was. However, Light makes the decision to go not just for the world, but for the excitement that it is the greatest battle of his life. Everyone then assures him that no matter what happens, they will be together again.
However, when Light uses Proof of Truth's effect to summon his friends' DigiFriends, this also summons his friends due to the bond each of them has with their DigiFriends. Subaru supports Light when he plays Baccherus, Grand Ghostie. Winning the battle, Subaru and the rest use their ace cards to clear the way for Light and save Wolfram.
Just before the Tree of Woe disappears, Arc Ruler offers Seventh Flame to make everyone forget that they saved the world so they can go on with their normal lives. Subaru agrees saying that only they need to remember what happened.
Upon returning, Kaguya decides to move in with Subaru, who goes to the club to organize a party. However, they end up going to watch the battle between Light and Mikado.
Personality[]
He has a cheerful and energetic mood, but sometimes shows a dark expression. Subaru actually has a lot of internal problems, mostly stemming from his family's expectations and an inferiority complex towards his more talented younger brother.
By his own admission Subaru doesn't have a lot of motivation and prefers to "take it easy". Even though he goes to a school dedicated to treating the game as serious business, he doesn't take Shadowverse very seriously. But when he does actually decide to play, he turns out to be very skilled.
Deck[]
Subaru uses a Shadowcraft deck. His deck is based around Ghosts and quickly summoning them, as well as boosting them with cards like Mischievous Zombie and his ace, Masquerade Ghost, who can turn them into Gargantuan Ghosts. Many of his followers have Last Words that revives them in future turns, allowing to reuse its effects and fill his graveyard.
Subaru later makes use of cards like Ghastly Banishment and Colossal Grudge to take advantage of his banished Ghosts, as well as a new ace card, Masquerade Ghost, Sincere that can only be summoned with enough banished cards.

Etymology[]
- Subaru's personal name is written in katakana (スバル), which has no special meaning. However, if written with the kanji 昴, it can possibly mean "Pleiades."
- Subaru's surname "Makabe" is written with the kanji 真 (ma), meaning "real, genuine" and 壁 (kabe), meaning "wall." It's also pronounced similarly to the English word "macabre," meaning "frightening, ghoulish or spooky", which fittingly describes his class of choice, Shadowcraft.
