Verdilia is one of the main protagonists of Lessons from Lainecrest.
Verdilia is a leader of the Havencraft class. Her leader skin can be obtained by purchasing season 11 of the premium Battle Pass.
Personality[]
At first glance, Verdilia appears to be an easily bored and uncaring teacher with a sloppy demeanor, who puts little effort into her curriculum. In reality, she is kind and inquisitive, falling naturally into a mentor role; rather than classwork, she focuses her effort on carefully analyzing each student's "personality, abilities, and beliefs" to better guide them. She is generally a stoic woman of few words, only becoming emotional when faced with someone as stubborn as she is. However, she will often think out loud to herself, even more so than other characters.
This stubbornness means she is confident in her own personality, abilities, and beliefs. Even when her actions seemingly hurt others, she earnestly believes she is acting for the greater good, and that her planning will turn out well in the end. She can also be somewhat dismissive of anything that does not line up with her goals; though she was concerned about Alicia's disappearance, she ultimately decided it was "not her problem".
Her magical powers stem from her homeland's deity, the Tree of a Thousand Harvests, which she defended as a sibyl. They include sensing and tracking mana (like other mages), creating damaging blasts of light, and conjuring magical vines or trees from the ground. After stealing the power of the goddess within the tree, she became capable of controlling this power more effectively, even creating an entire forest within a classroom to disorient Lyelth. She laters reveals the true indentity of the deity as the Goddess of Cycles, and that its authentic power is to control time itself.
Her hobbies include sleeping, her favorite food is meat, and her least favorite food is (any kind of) vegetables.
Story[]
History[]
Verdilia comes from a family of sibyls that worship their deity, the Tree of a Thousand Harvests, the medium of the Goddess of Cycles, and she was the most capable sibyl of all.
One day, Castelle joined her big sister in patrolling the deep woods, where fearsome monsters lived, and a monster attacked them. Verdilia protected her from the monster with her magic, but the vines she created attacked Castelle, and she couldn't control them. Before Castelle passed out from pain, the last thing she saw was Verdilia crying.
Verdilia was condemned by her parent for angering the tree, but Verdilia was more concerned about Castelle. Verdilia ended the argument by agreeing to work harder in exchange for Castelle's safety and Verdilia promises Castelle she would keep her safe. Castelle rarely saw Verdilia and every time her sister was visibly exhausted, so she chose to delve into her plant studies to avoid bothering her.
Verdilia comes to understand that their goddess's perspective of time was so vast, normal people's entire lives were seconds in comparison, and that influenced the sibyls and villagers into believing they were insignificant and the only thing of worth they could do was serve the Goddess. So Verdilia took the Goddess so no one else would be enslaved to her. She also realizes that Castelle was capable of being a far better medium for the Goddess, which is why the Goddess attacked her once before when Verdilia tried to protect her from a forest monster, to forcefully make her the new medium. If their parents had found out, Castelle would have been trapped in their forest forever serving the Goddess, so she also stole the Goddess to prevent that outcome.
Upon becoming the medium of the Goddess of Cycles, Verdilia decides to leave the village even if her people comes to consider her a criminal. Castelle tries to go with her, but Verdilia abandoned her in order to keep her safe and away from the goddess.
Over time, Verdilia would become a teacher in Lainecrest Academy. There she got called the "angel of death" because she used her power over time on her entire class, allowing them to compress multiple cycles worth of school curriculum into their studies, allowing them to get perfect grades and get scouted by the army after graduation. However, they ended up dying because Verdilia failed to realize that their grades weren't enough to prepare them for a real battle.
Lessons from Lainecrest[]
The first day of classes at Lainecrest, Verdilia leaves her class to do busy work while she attends to other matters. She inquires to Alicia's teacher about her absence and Weiss explains that Alicia has withdrawn her enrollment. Wiess explains that the school's headmaster has assigned Verdilia to a special task. Verdilia reluctantly follows Weiss to an abandoned classroom and Wiess reveals she has been assigned a new class of only two students to prepare them for a new exam based on both curriculum tracks. The first student is Lyelth, the leader of the Independent Track and a prodigy who defeated a teacher without anyone ever even seeing his magic. The second student is Amaryllis, who is known as the princess and has never attended any lectures or even been seen, leading to doubts among students that she even exists. Despite the difficulty of the tasks given to her, Veridilia knows the headmaster has already made things irreversible and decides to see it through, though she snaps at Weiss when he inquires about her younger sister.
After Weiss leaves, Verdilia decides to begin searching for her students while continuing to investigate Alicia's disappearance, not trusting Wiess's explanation.
In her first line of investigation, she seeks to recruit Lyelth into her class, but Lyelth is more interested in waging war against the guiding track in order to change Lainecrest to fit his views. Verdilia decides to convince him by defeating him in a duel, asking for time to prepare. In this, she organizes a fake fight between students to discover Lyelth's magic without success, she consults the director Cornelius who turns out to be Lyelth's father and when looking for the director's biography she finds out about Lyelth's mother who died of an illness. Verdilia confronts Lyelth and reveals she's learned that he associates his self-worth with victory and strength and also reveals she's discovered the secret of his invisible magic and proves it by deflecting one of his attacks. Lyelth wasn't using magic, but a set of enchanted marionette artifacts he inherited from his mother and the reason he kept his puppet's concealed was because he was trying to hide the fact he couldn't use magic. Virdilia unleashes a frightening display of her plant magic, turning the classroom into an ever growing forest. Lyelth tries to counter, but Verdilia easily predicts his plan to get close and reveals his weakness is his lack of faith in his own strengt. Lyelth asks Verdilia why she spared his puppets and she answers that she knew they were inherited from his mother and would never forgive her if she broke them. She offers to teach Lyelth how he can defeat his father and tells him there is more to victory that winning battles; its about fulfilling your objectives, something he's lost sight of to the point he doesn't even know what he's fighting for. She tells Lyelth her class offers the chance the defeat Cornelius in a way that matters. Conceding defeat, Lyelth accepts his part of the deal and joins Virdilia's class.
At the same time, searching for Amaryllis, the student explains there is a legend about another library at Lainecrest where the princess can be found and the key to find it lies in the normal library. Verdilia goes to the library and finds a book titled 'The Princess and the Wyrmwitch' and upon reading it, Verdilia discovers she has been sent to the secret library where she finds Amaryllis. Amaryllis realizes she mistook Virdilia for her friend Lilium and radiates a strange mana before Verdilia is suddenly expelled from the hidden library by a dragon. After meeting the Student Council President, Lilum, who had a past with Amaryllis and the story of The Princess and the Wyrmwitch, Verdilia discovers on another visit that Amaryllis suffers from a curse like the princess in the story and Lillium claims that Verdilia must play the part of "knight" so she and Amaryllis can have their happy ending. However, in another confrontation with Amaryllis, Verdilia discovers that it is actually all due to Lilum's Creation Magic that binds them to the "roles" of the book's story, leading to Amaryllis living trapped in the illusion of a fairy tale. Verdilia encourages Amaryllis that she will help her find out who she is and what her magic can do as her professor.
Also, looking for clues about Alicia, the teacher can't think why the excited Alicia would leave so suddenly. Verdilia finds Castelle looking for Alicia and is surprised to see her little sister attending Lainecrest. Verdilia realizes that the headmaster brought Castelle to Lainecrest to control her and she warns Castelle not to talk about her past at the school, refusing to talk about what she's done since she left. Verdilia asks Castelle about Alicia and learns Alicia was going to meet with her tomorrow and hasn't been seen since. The two sisters agree to have lunch together in the future while Verdilia realizes there's some kind of conspiracy going on.
Lyelth and Amaryllis arrive for Verdilia's class. The two students get acquainted and Verdilia reveals that they were assigned to her so they pass their exams. However, since Cornelius never asked for her input, she decide to return the favor and change the classes to reflect more relevant subjects for her students. She will be teaching Lyelth how to defeat Cornelius and teaching Amaryllis how to find her own magic and begins her classes.
Lessons from Lainecrest: Testament[]
Lyelth practices with Verdilia to prepare to fight Cornelius. Verdilia reviews that Cornelius is a master necromancer and that the normal method of countering Necromancy by taking control of his corpses won't work since he uses specially preserved corpses that give him unrelinquishable control over them. She also encourages Lyelth to interact with Amaryllis, believing he could learn from her, but Lyelth doesn't see the point in befriending her. Amaryllis arrives for class with a doll she found that clearly has been cursed. Lyelth is in disbelief of Amaryllis's naivety in pick up a potentially dangerous item, but Verdilia lets Amaryllis keep the doll until class ends and makes her promise to return it to its owner.
The next day, Lyelth talks to Verdilia who confirms she knew the doll was harmless from the start and kept it a secret so Lyelth and Amaryllis would start to get along. After Lyelth tells Verdilia about Amaryllis's garden, she goes up and finds Amaryllis trying to protect her garden and working on finding the resolve to face Lillium. Verdilia encourages Amaryllis to use the opportunity to find her magic and protect the garden. The idea works and Amaryllis not only protects the budding flowers but fills them with enough energy to bloom instantly.
Verdilia checks on how Castelle is doing in her classes and gives her a seed enchanted to contact her in case of an emergency. After Castelle leaves, Verdilia reveals she knows Lyelth and Amaryllis are watching her, and the latter come out of hiding. She explains she knew they were following her the whole time and decided to play along to test their growth and give them practice for the skills they were working on. She also explains that Castelle is none of their business, but if they want to know more about her, all they have to do is ask.
The day for exams arrives and Verdilia sends off Lyelth and Amarylis with some encouraging words. Later, Verdilia is caught preparing to bring a cake to celebrate when her students pass their exams by some other teachers, who note she's been happier since she got her new glass. The conversation is interrupted by an explosion going off. Verdilia contacts her students through her seeds and warns them the campus is about to become a battlefield. She tells the two to stay safe while she finds them, but Lyelth and Amaryllis reveal they want to help stop the fighting by defeating Lilium and Cornelius. Verdilia objects to the plan, believing she should fight instead, but her students declare this battle is their responsibility. Verdilia tells them that in the worst-case scenario, she can stop the battle all by herself and has them promise to run if their lives become at risk.
Verdilia searches for Castelle, and uses her tracking seed to follow her near the center of the first explosion. She spots Castelle, but the latter suddenly emits a strange magic that repels the former. Before Verdilia can go after Castelle, she is stopped by Weiss, who Verdilia blames for what's happened to Castelle. Weiss reveals Castelle's change is mostly by her own efforts and that he is behind the conflict and Alicia's disappearance. Verdilia prepares to destroy Weiss, but Weiss reveals an incredible hidden power that allows him to block her attack. Weiss reveals he isn't human, but a Seraph, a being in the service of Nerva searching for her vessel. Verdilia realizes that Weiss has been sacrificing students to find a proper vessel and Weiss mocks her by revealling Castelle will be Nerva's vessel. Verdilia blames Weiss for influencing Castelle into becoming a vessel, despite Weiss's claims to the contrary, and battles Weiss.
Weiss's defense are impenetrable against Verdilia's attacks and Weiss mocks her by reminding Verdilia all of her previous students died after graduating and praising Castelle's efforts to become a vessel. Infuriated, Verdilia unleashes her full power and reveals her magic doesn't control nature, her ability to rapidly grow plants comes from the ability to accelerate time itself. At full power, Verdilia's magic can compress an entire year's worth of magic in a single attack, which is why she never uses that much power at risk of killing someone. Verdilia's full power easily overpowers Weiss's defenses and defeats him. Verdilia continues searching for Castelle to protect her from Weiss's plan, unaware that Weiss knows that he didn't do a thing to Castelle before he collapses. When Verdilia finds Castelle and tries to heal the changes brought by the new power, only for Castelle to reveal Weiss never made her do anything and that she became a vessel on her own.
Castelle revels in her new power as Nerva's vessel and finally getting her sister's attention. Verdilia is horrified by discovering Castelle's past actions and blames Weiss for influencing Castelle to kill their village and tried to purge Nerva's power from Castelle, but Castelle blocks her efforts. Castelle explains that she has idolized Verdilia ever since they were children for being the only one to care about her.
Fearing Castelle could destroy the world with Nerva's incredible power, Verdilia tries to purge Nerva's power again with increasing strength, but it's not enough to faze Castelle and the more she uses the Goddess power, the more her grip tightens on her. Verdilia blames herself for failing again, allowing Weiss to murder students like Alicia, causing Castelle to fall under Nerva's sway, and risking Lyelth and Amarylis's lives because she could handle the problems herself. Upset that the person she worships is despairing, Castelle lashes out and attacks, but Lyelth and Amarylis protect Verdilia, declaring that Verdilia isn't only just Castelle's sister, but also their professor.
The three struggle to fight Castelle, who is angered by Lyelth and Amarylis's presence, believing they aren't worthy of Verdilia. Castelle knocks them down and declares she will be with Verdilia forever and destroy everything that gets in the way of them being together. Verdilia comes up with a plan to win using her own abilities and admits to Castelle that her village's worship of the Goddess made her dependant on her power and was afraid of using up all that power. As they fight, Castelle asks Verdilia why is fighting her now that she is strong enough, and Verdilia explains that she never wanted Castelle to be strong or like her and that she won't push her away anymore. Verdilia then uses every last bit of the Goddess powers, leaving only her own, but that frees her up to channel a new power and takes half of Nerva's power from Castelle so she and Castelle will use it all up in their battle. Castelle asks Verdilia why she is wasting the power they could use for themselves to be together forever and Verdilia tells Castelle she is clinging to the past, trying to force both of them to be the way they were back in the village, and has to move on with her life.
The duel ends with Nerva's power completely exhausted and Castelle refuses to leave her sister. Verdilia assures her that she will stay with her and help her atone for the lives she took. She apologizes for breaking their last promise to meet up and vows to fulfil it tomorrow.
Lainecrest is eventually restored, and classes resume and Castelle joins Verdilia's class. During that time, she confessed her murders, but since their village was not in the jurisdiction of any nation's law, she won't face legal repercussion. Verdilia promises Castelle to help her atone for her actions and remembers that when she took part of Nerva's power from Castelle, their life forces became linked. She decided to raise Castelle to observe the effects of their live's being linked and to take responsibility.
Whispers of Purgation: Last Words[]
Vardilia and Castelle are taken by Itsurugi to Nerva's dimension to help Yuwan fight the Keeper's minions.
When the minions disappear after Nerva's defeat, Verdilia and Castelle return to Lainecrest promising to save a place for Itsurugi if they meet again.
